How to Prepare

  1. Soak the lentils (toor dal and chana dal) in water for 4-6 hours as part of pre-processing.
  2. Drain the soaked lentils and grind them coarsely with red chilies, asafoetida, and salt, without adding water.
  3. Steam the ground lentil mixture in a steamer for 10-12 minutes until cooked. Let it cool.
  4. Crumble the steamed lentil mixture into small pieces using your hands or a fork.
  5. Wash and cut the drumsticks into 2-inch pieces. Boil them in water with a pinch of salt until tender (about 8-10 minutes), then drain.
  6. Heat oil in a large pan, add mustard seeds, and let them splutter. Add urad dal and curry leaves, sauté until golden.
  7. Add the crumbled lentil mixture to the pan and sauté on medium heat for 5-7 minutes until slightly crispy.
  8. Add the boiled drumsticks to the pan, mix well, and cook for another 3-5 minutes to combine flavors.
  9. Adjust salt if needed and serve hot with rice and sambar or rasam.
