How to Prepare

  1. Rinse the moong dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed moong dal
  3. 10 cups of water
  4. 2 tsp turmeric powder, and 2 tsp salt. Pressure cook for 2 whistles on medium heat.
  5. Once the pressure releases naturally, open the cooker and mash the dal slightly with a ladle for a smoother consistency.
  6. In a large pot, heat 5 tbsp ghee over medium heat. Add 2 tsp cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  7. Add 5 finely chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  8. Add 5 tsp ginger-garlic paste and cook for 2 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  9. Add 5 chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  10. Add 2.5 tsp red chili powder
  11. 5 tsp coriander powder, and 1.25 tsp garam masala. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  12. Pour the cooked moong dal into the pot with the masala. Adjust consistency by adding 5-10 cups of water as needed.
  13. Simmer the dal for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  14. Add chopped coriander leaves for garnish before serving.
  15. Serve hot with rice or roti.
